Short Story

FFGA Community Supported Agriculture – the Business

Annually, around US$ 55 million is spent on importing fresh produce for Sint Maarten. FFGA- CSA seeks to curb this dependency by reducing the import of fresh produce, ensuring funds circulate within the local agricultural community. This is achieved by establishing an exclusive commercial venture dedicated to Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), aiming to create a sustainable business model that actively involves the community in supporting local agriculture, fostering a direct connection between farmers and consumers. Supporters can become co-investors through the Eco Shares program, participating in the growth journey and sharing in resulting profits and dividends. This approach enables local farmers to scale up their produce, leveraging financial benefits and utilizing property and farming machinery offered by FFGA-CSA.

Campaign Story

Embrace Local Flavour and Reap Shared Bounties.  FFGA Community Supported Agriculture is all about Harvesting Connections and Nourishing Communities!

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Overview

CSA is an innovative food production and distribution system that establishes a direct link between FFGA farmers and consumers. Subscribers have the opportunity to purchase “shares” of the FFGA farm’s harvest in advance, entitling them to receive a portion of the crops as they are harvested.

Funding Model

Funding for the farm’s entire operational costs is secured through membership fees collected before the start of each season. Participants in the program receive either a weekly or bi-weekly box containing a variety of produce and farm goods. This includes in-season fruits, herbs, vegetables, and the potential addition of dried goods, eggs, milk, meat, fish, (edible) flowers, honey, jams, pickles, and other preserves, all at overall reduced food costs.

FFGA’s Commitment to Organic Farming

FFGA remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainable and organic farming methods, guaranteeing the creation of flavourful and nutritious food from fertile land. Encompassing 10 acres, the farm nurtures a variety of vegetables, fruit, herbs, and spices, employing solely organic techniques to promote the enduring health of the soil. The agricultural practices are adaptable to climate change and align with agroecological principles.

Promoting Healthy Lifestyles & Cooking

Assistance is provided to members in preparing and enjoying their vegetables. Each food box includes a newsletter featuring recipes and cooking tips. The FFGA website facilitates recipe searches, and various food box options cater to different dietary preferences. Members can also opt to receive regular emails detailing the contents of their upcoming box. FFGA encourages members to actively participate in farm activities, offering insights into farm operations and hands-on experience in vegetable cultivation.

Expectations from FFGA Produce

The farm grows produce that thrives in the Caribbean region on a feasible scale, ensuring a diverse array of seasonal items. Members can anticipate receiving enough produce for home-cooked dinners 5–6 days a week. Seasonal variations and unique vegetables are introduced each planting season, providing members with culinary challenges and the opportunity to explore new flavours.

CSA Subscriptions and Farm Share

A Farm Share provides families with a consistent supply of high-quality, nutritious food from a local, organic farm. Members can choose seasonally-available vegetables packaged specifically for their family, supporting a family farm at FFGA. Subscription prices will be disclosed in the future.

Benefits of CSA Ownership

Owning shares in the CSA business comes with various advantages, including access to fresh, local produce, support for local agriculture, community connection, diverse seasonal eating, environmental sustainability, educational opportunities, risk-sharing, and transparency and traceability. Each benefit contributes to a comprehensive and fulfilling experience, fostering a sense of connection to the land, community, and a commitment to healthy living. Interested individuals are encouraged to inquire about specific details of the FFGA-CSA program.

About FFGA Community Supported Agriculture

FFGA-CSA, or Food Farm Gardens Association – Community Supported Agriculture, is a unique initiative connecting the community with local agriculture. By investing in “shares,” members receive regular deliveries of fresh, locally grown produce. FFGA is dedicated to organic and sustainable farming practices across its 10-acre farm, fostering community connections and a healthy lifestyle. Ownership of shares offers benefits like access to fresh produce, support for sustainable agriculture, and a sense of community. FFGA maintains its commitment to flavourful and nutritious food through organic techniques adaptable to climate change.

Why this initiative?

The FFGA project is essential for several reasons:

1. Post-Hurricane Recovery: Sint Maarten is still recovering from the impacts of hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. The FFGA project aims to contribute to the rebuilding efforts and enhance the resilience of the community.

5. Sustainable Agriculture: The project embraces sustainable and organic farming practices, incorporating technologies like saline permaculture, aquaponics, hydroponics, and horticulture. These methods contribute to environmental sustainability and long-term soil health.

6. Job Creation and Economic Opportunities: FFGA envisions not only supplying fresh produce but also creating ongoing jobs and business opportunities. This economic diversification is crucial for reducing vulnerability and enhancing self-sufficiency.

7. Community Building: The establishment of community gardens and the Food Farm Gardens Association fosters a sense of community by bringing together individuals with gardening skills. It promotes collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the overall well-being of communities on Sint Maarten.

In summary, the FFGA project addresses pressing challenges, including recovery from natural disasters, economic impacts of global events, food security, health issues, and the promotion of sustainable agriculture and community resilience in Sint Maarten.

Construction & Services

The construction and services associated with the Food Farm Gardens Association (FFGA) CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) project include:

Construction

On the FFGA – CSA 10-acre site, various types of agriculture will be implemented, each adapted to specific conditions, resources, and goals.

The objective is to engage in larger-scale agriculture compared to current St. Maarten  farmers, with a focus on supplying at least 15% of the Dutch Sint Maarten population (approximately 6000 people) in the first operational year. Combined with the deployment of arable land and hurricane-resistant structures like greenhouses, FFGA – CSA will apply the following types of agriculture:

1. Mixed Farming: Cultivation of crops and raising of animals on the same farm, balancing risks and optimizing resource use.

2. Organic Farming: Avoids synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and genetically modified organisms, focusing on sustainable practices and soil health.

3. Precision Agriculture: Utilizes technology, such as GPS, sensors, and data analytics, to optimize field-level management in crop farming.

4. Vertical Farming: Involves growing crops in vertically stacked layers or inclined surfaces, often practiced in urban areas to maximize space.

5. Aquaculture: Cultivation of aquatic organisms like fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants in controlled environments.

6. Agroforestry: Integrates trees and shrubs into agricultural systems, promoting biodiversity, improving soil health, and providing additional products.

7. Horticulture: Focuses on the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants, often involving intensive and specialized techniques.

8. Silviculture: Involves the cultivation of forests for timber and other wood products, including practices like planting, pruning, and thinning.

9. Apiculture: The practice of beekeeping for the production of honey, beeswax, and other hive products.

10. Hydroponics and Aeroponics: Soilless cultivation methods involving growing plants in nutrient-rich water solutions, commonly used in controlled environments.

While considering Hurricane seasons these types of agriculture may overlap. It is our intention to employ a combination of methods based on their specific circumstances and goals.

Services

1. Weekly or Bi-weekly Deliveries: Members of the FFGA-CSA will receive regular deliveries of fresh, locally grown produce, including fruits, herbs, and vegetables. The CSA program may extend to include other farm goods such as dried goods, eggs, milk, meat, fish, (edible) flowers, honey, jams, pickles, and preserves.

3. Educational Initiatives: The CSA program includes educational components, providing newsletters with recipes and cooking tips. Members can access resources on the website, search for recipes, and receive regular emails forecasting the contents of their upcoming delivery. FFGA encourages a healthy lifestyle and supports members in preparing and enjoying their vegetables.

4. Community Engagement: Members are invited to actively engage with the FFGA farm. Opportunities include involvement in farm operations, gaining exposure to vegetable cultivation, and participating in open-farm and garden events such as “u-pick days.” The CSA program aims to establish a direct connection between farmers and consumers, fostering a sense of community.

5. Ownership Opportunities: The FFGA-CSA offers backers an opportunity to own shares in the business through the Eco Shares program. This allows co-investors to experience the journey of growth, enjoy ROI profits, and receive dividends.

In summary, the FFGA-CSA not only provides fresh, local produce but also engages the community, promotes sustainable farming practices, and offers backers a unique opportunity to actively participate in and benefit from the success of the CSA business.

Q: What is the long-term vision for the project?

A: The long-term vision for the FFGA-CSA project is to establish a sustainable and resilient agricultural model that actively involves the community in supporting local agriculture. By cultivating over 80 types of vegetables, herbs, and spices using organic methods on a 10-acre site, the project aims to promote healthy living, environmental sustainability, and community engagement. The vision includes creating a direct link between farmers and consumers through the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, fostering a sense of connection to the land, community, and a dedication to healthy living. The project aspires to be a catalyst for positive change, contributing to the overall well-being of Sint Maarten.

Q: Will I continue getting perks and enjoy incentives when I am not backing a project anymore?

A: The perks and incentives associated with backing the FFGA-CSA project are typically offered during the active funding or membership period. Once the backing or membership period concludes, the specific perks and incentives may no longer be available. It’s essential to refer to the project’s terms and conditions or contact the organizers for detailed information on the duration of perks and incentives.
