Community Supported Agriculture
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a food production and distribution system that directly connects FFGA farmers and consumers within the food system more closely. This is done by allowing the consumer to subscribe to the harvest of the FFGA farm and or group of farms.
In short: people buy “shares” of the FFGA farm’s harvest in advance and then receive a portion of the crops as they’re harvested.
Funding for the farms entire operating costs are acquired from membership fees submitted prior to the season’s start. Participating in the program each member receives either a weekly or bi-weekly box of produce or other farm goods. This includes in-season fruits, herbs and vegetables and can expand to dried goods, eggs, milk, meat, fish, flowers, honey, jams, pickles and or other preserves at overall lower food costs.
FFGA’s Organic Farming
FFGA is deeply committed to sustainable and organic farming practices that produce flavourful, nutritious food from healthy land. Healthy soil grows healthy plants that feed healthy bodies. Therefore, land stewardship is at the heart of our farm, allowing us to produce delicious, healthy vegetables for our customers and nourishing the ecosystem on which we all depend. We use only organic growing methods, always with an eye toward increasing the long-term health of the soil and leaving this planet better than we found it. On 2 acres of land, we grow hundreds of varieties of over 45 different types of vegetables, herbs and spices, including less common heirloom varieties and specialty culinary herbs.
Healthy Lifestyle & Cooking
We help members prepare and enjoy their vegetables. Each food box comes with a newsletter of recipes and cooking tips, and our website allows you to search for recipes in our newsletters. We offer different food boxes to match different diets such as Vegetarian, Vegan, Low Carbs diet for diabetics such as Orthomolecular Nutrition cooking and more. We offer help with planning meals, members can also choose to receive regular emails forecasting the contents of their next box.
We invite members to help work at FFGA farm, an opportunity for members to see our farm operation and gain first-hand exposure to growing vegetables. Furthermore FFGA maintains the relationship with subscribers by sending weekly letters of what is happening on the farm, inviting them for harvest and or to the open-farm and garden events such as “u-pick days”.
What to expect
We grow produce that thrives in this Caribbean region and that is suitable for intensive growing on a small scale. That means in December through March we grow a lot of greens and roots. To keep it exciting, we have many variations on salad greens and cooking greens in the mustard family plus lettuces, pea shoots, and spinach. To change things up and make dinner exciting, you might see pea shoots in the salad mix and definitely sweet potato greens when it gets too hot for lettuce. Furthermore we supply many of the summer favourites such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and hot peppers. We grow garlic, okra, potatoes, cucumbers, beans and summer squash.
Our goal is to give you enough produce to eat dinner at home 5 –6 days a week, depending on how many vegetables you use in each meal and depending on how many people you cook for each time (and whether or not you make extra for lunch the next day.)
Another important goal for us is that you are happy with the variety of produce you receive, keeping in mind the restrictions our climate season gives us, and that you are content with the number of culinary challenges we present to you each planting season as we give you vegetables you’ve never seen before or heard of! We hope to build a relationship of trust, and encourage you to try everything at least once.
CSA Subscriptions and farm share
A Farm Share is the perfect way for your family to receive high-quality, nutritious food every week from a local, organic farm. Every week, you’ll be able to choose seasonally-available vegetables that are harvested at peak freshness and packaged specifically with your family in mind. This allows you to eat a fresh, seasonal diet while also supporting a family farm at FFGA.
More info on the price subscriptions will be published in the future.
